The Quotable Internet

27 Jan 2010 (Wed)

It’s an interesting little idea, albeit simple: randomly generate famous (or not-so-famous) quotes, and choose the first five that strike you in some way. So I’m going to post mine here. Maybe it’ll give me something to expand on later. I’d expand now, but in preparation for tolerating the State the of the Union (let’s face it, the state of the union is “Pretty Fucking Sorry”) I’ve imbibed almost half a bottle of wine, and really, you’re just lucky this isn’t a post displaying the first five Lolcats that make me snort.

Avoid the crowd. Do your own thinking independently. Be the chess player, not the chess piece.
~ Ralph Charell

Sometimes the appropriate response to reality is to go insane.
~ Philip K. Dick (1928 – 1982), Valis

Everyone rises to their level of incompetence.
~ Laurence J. Peter (1919 – 1988), “The Peter Principle”
I love that out of thousands of quotes, this one came up. It’s a recurring theme in my life, and I couldn’t agree more.

The best index to a person’s character is (a) how he treats people who can’t do him any good,
and (b) how he treats people who can’t fight back.

~ Abigail van Buren (1918 – )

Never try to reason the prejudice out of a man.
It was not reasoned into him, and cannot be reasoned out.

~ Sydney Smith (1771 – 1845)

Now wasn’t that a lot better than Lolcats? Ok, well, mostly better than Lolcats. Because there really are some entertaining Lolcats.
